Winter is almost behind us and spring is here. The temperatures are starting to warm up and we are itching to get outside and enjoy our yards and water gardens. Springtime in Alabama can be unpredictable, warm one day and freezing cold the next. So, you should delay planting your tender vegetation (annual flowers) until after you pay taxes. The 100-year freeze date is April 1st and there are no recorded freezes after April 15th. We know you’re excited about the warm days but it is best to wait. Remember the late freezes we had last spring?
As we have mentioned earlier, now is a good time to perform a cleanout on your pond. A pond cleanout replicates what occurs in nature with the heavy spring rains. The rains flush the leaves and debris out of the stream beds and natural bodies of water. Another good reason to perform a cleanout now is because your plants have not emerged from their winter dormancy. Finally, the water temperature from your faucet this time of year is generally the same temperature as the water temperature in your pond, so a cleanout would be less stressful on your fish. If you need help with your cleanout, contact us.
Once you have your pond and yard looking good, why not take the opportunity to show it off and help charity at the same time. Our annual Parade of Ponds is rapidly approaching. This year, our Decatur Parade of Ponds returns bigger and better than ever to support the Morgan County Chapter of the American Cancer Society and local schools. And the Birmingham Parade of Ponds in its fourth year will again support Hand In Paw. If your school would like tickets to sell as a fundraiser, contact us.
The Decatur Parade of Ponds will be Saturday, May 10th and Sunday, May 11th, with a VIP event on Friday, May 9th. Contact us to find out how to participate in this worthwhile event. Non-VIP tickets are $15.00 and ALL proceeds go to charity.
The Birmingham Area Parade of Ponds is scheduled for the fourth weekend in June, which is Saturday the 28th of June and Sunday the 29th. We will reveal the details of the VIP event at a later date. Again, contact us if you want to participate in this event.
In the next installment of our newsletter, find out about the exciting project we did for the Victory Junction Gang Camp in Randalman, North Carolina.
